On Wednesday January 30th at 7PM, canoe historian and raconteur, David Finch, will show the film “Headless Valley” and regale us with stories of the Calgary couple that made the ground-breaking film. Their two-month expedition in 1957 (before satellite phones, GPS and rescue helicopters) entailed severe isolation, insert swarms and terrifying rapids.
David is a fantastic presenter and this promises to be an entertaining evening! The presentation will be held at the Undercurrents store, 6531 Bowness Rd NW. Please come by!

It is true when they say, “If you take care of your kayak, then your kayak will take care of you.” If your paddling season is not over yet, it may be soon. Now is the ideal time to spent quality time with your boat, before you put it away for the season. We are often too busy during the paddling season to address the little things on your boat that need attention, but now is the time to get to it. Then when spring comes, you and your kayak can just hit the water!
Here is a checklist of items you want to address when winterizing your kayak.
Check all of the deck rigging. Look for bungees that are losing their stretchiness, have nicks or whose ends are fraying. Frayed ends can be fixed, but you need to replace otherwise damaged bungees. Check the deck hardware for UV damage, especially the plastic ones, and replace if necessary. Check that your perimeter line still has ‘nice hand’ and is not too tight in its hardware – you should be able to easily slip you hand between the line and the deck.

Canoe Museum Open in Calgary!
My beloved and I had the opportunity to attend the grand opening gala of the canoe exhibit at Fort Calgary last night. The opening party was wonderful, with great food and an interesting/humourous presentation by Canadian Canoe Museum Executive Director, James Raffin. The exhibit was great! The exhibit is actually the travelling exhibit from The Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough. The CCM is fantastic and well worth the visit if you are out that way! For those of us staying closer to home this summer, the travelling exhibit is a great representation of the canoe and the museum. And, it's in Calgary! This is a rare opportunity to see some of the CCM's collection and learn an astonishing amount of interesting information about canoes. The exhibit is only at Fort Calgary until November 6th, so head on down to the Fort and have a look! Admission is only $11 and it includes all of the Fort exhibits, plus the temporary canoe exhibit! At Undercurrents, we are proud to sponsor this exhibit! http://www.fortcalgary.com/canoe/

The Latest & Greatest Paddling Sport!
I have exciting news about the latest and greatest paddling sport - Greenland style SUP'ing. I just invented it! Yesterday! If you are unfamiliar with SUP, it stands for Stand Up Paddleboarding, and it is exactly as it sounds. You stand up on a board (looks like a big, wide surfboard) and paddle with what is essentially a long canoe paddle. SUP is a legitimate sport that is experiencing explosive growth right now. Google it and you will see lots of photos of Hollywood-types doing it, news about races and articles about how anyone can do it. (Undercurrents might even come up in your Google search as we are among the leaders in Canada in teaching SUP.) Back to the story of my great invention ... yesterday my beloved and I went out to the Ghost reservoir to play around with a racing SUP and a Delta 16. Long story short, I forgot my SUP paddle but had brought my new Greenland-style sea kayak paddle.
