This one-day comprehensive on-water course will give you the hands-on training and skills required to kayak in protected waters. This course features kayaking safety information, essential equipment knowledge, launching & landing skills, kayak strokes, and introduce you to edging (intentionally leaning your kayak). As well, you'll have the opportunity to experience what it feels like to capsize in a kayak, how to be rescued by another kayaker, and how to rescue a paddling partner who has capsized. Finally, we'll discuss useful information to round out your understanding of kayaking, including aspects of boat design, safety equipment, and proper clothing.
The skills and enthusiasm of our certified instructors, combined with the low participant:instructor ratio, will ensure a fun, comfortable, safe and educational experience!
You will leave the Kayak: Combo course with the skills, knowledge and confidence necessary for kayaking trips in sheltered waters. You will receive your Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Skills certificate.
1:6 (MAX) Our ratio is the lowest in Alberta to ensure you have the best instructional experience possible! ? Part of the famous Undercurrents experience!
Kayak and related gear is provided.
This clinic is designed for adults - all participants must be at least 16 years old. Children 12-15 are welcome to participate if a parent is also registered in the clinic.
All participants are required to complete and sign our standard waiver.
All of our instructors are Paddle Canada certified! Their certifications are current, and they undergo regular professional development. Most paddling schools in Alberta don’t meet that standard. ? A Part of the famous Undercurrents experience!
After completing this course get out and practice! Then decide whether you want to try river kayaking and thus take our Kayak the River course, or try touring kayaking (AKA sea kayaking) by taking our Touring Kayak Level 1 course.
None! But a willingness to learn and a fondness for fun won't hurt. ☺

Registration & Refunds
Full payment is due at registration to secure your spot in the course.
On the rare occasion when Undercurrents cancels a lesson, we will issue a full refund or make every reasonable effort to register you in an equivalent program; it is your choice. We need 3 participants to run a course.
If you cancel for any reason more than 7 days (14 days for multi-day courses) prior to the course commencement, you will receive a full refund less our $10 administrative fee.
There is no refund if you cancel for any reason within 7 days (14 days for multi-day courses) of the course.
Courses go rain or shine. Here in Alberta we can have rain, snow, blistering heat or high winds - sometimes on the same day. Don't believe weather forecasts; dress for varying weather conditions. If you need help, our store staff can give you great advice!
A “risk of thunderstorms” forecast does not mean we will cancel a course. During the warm season “risks” are issued too frequently; we only experience thunderstorms at our course locations 10-20% of the time that a “risk” is issued. We will meet at the course location and make an appropriate decision using the outdoor industry’s standard lightning protocol.
