Description:

This course will increase your paddling and coaching skills – candidates are constantly surprised by how much they learn! It is ideal for those that want to teach courses and facilitate daylong trips in sheltered conditions.

This course demands your full attention and commitment. You will review your boat handling skills and knowledge about weather, tides, currents, and navigation. A focus of the course is the art of teaching paddling, both on-shore and on-water.

Expected Outcome:

Upon successful completion of this course, candidates will be able to confidently teach a Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Level 1 course, self-rescue with confidence, paddle gracefully in moderate sea conditions, plan and execute lessons in sheltered water with clear objectives and learning outcomes, and demonstrate seamanship and good judgment in group management, safety, navigation and weather. You will receive your Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Level 1 Instructor certificate.

Instructor Student Ratio:

1:6 (MAX) to ensure you of the best instructional experience possible!

Notes:

Paddlers at this level usually own their own gear. (You need a kayak with sealed compartments at each end and a perimeter line.) If needed, kayaks and related gear are available for rent at the U of C Outdoor Centre. Rescue gear is provided.

After registration, you will receive assignments that need to be completed before the program begins.

Candidates need to register with Paddle Canada before the first day of the program – it will cost either $10 or $99, depending on your current Paddle Canada membership level.

Prerequisites:

At least 18 years of age.

Paddle Canada Sea Kayaking Level-2 skills certification.  You can take this program without your Level-2 skills certification but your certification as a Level-1 Instructor is delayed until Level-2 skill certification and all other Paddle Canada requirements are complete.

Paddling experience of at least 30 days in Level-1 conditions (including overnights).

Current certification in Standard First Aid (14 hours) with CPR.
